Red Cross Assistance (9/7/05)

Emergency Phase of Relief

  • Today, we are sheltering 145,711 people in more than 580 Red Cross shelters across 19 states.  We have served survivors more than 4 million hot meals.
  • The sheer volume of people affected, as well as the extensive geographical area impacted will require long-term, massive feeding and sheltering operations for many months to come.

In more than 580 shelters evacuees can find:

·        Hot Showers ·        Warm meals  ·        Clothing ·        Mental, emotional, and spiritual care:

o       To cope with the immense stress of being dislocated, Red Cross fields licensed trained and compassionate mental health counselors in its shelters and elsewhere.

·        Personal comfort (deodorant, soap, toothbrush, personal products, diapers)

·        Medical assessment and care (replacing dentures, diabetes medication, glasses)

·        Mental and emotional health (religious and professional counseling)

·        First aid

·        Casework assistance

o       Red Cross caseworkers are meeting one-one one with families and tailoring a recovery program to their unique situations

Next Phase of Relief

The next phase of relief is to create a bridge of assistance to meet emergency disaster needs until state and federal aid is available. Red Cross is activating the Emergency Housing Program, which covers the cost of hotel lodging for Hurricane Katrina evacuees, and interim financial assistance to meet the costs of essential items such as food, clothing and health related necessities.

 Emergency Lodging Program

  • Many people now in hotels are discovering they cannot return home and are exhausting their financial resources.
  • The Red Cross has established an emergency housing program to cover hotel costs for individuals and families who cannot afford hotel costs. As of September 5, an estimated 57,000 people have been assisted through this special transient accommodation program.
  • If you need lodging assistance, contact your local chapter in the community where you are currently located. To find your chapter, call 1-866-GET-INFO or log on: http://www.redcross.org/where/chapts.asp.

Interim Financial Assistance

  • We are today (9/7) launching a project to meet clients financial needs by providing checks, debit cards (called Client Assistance Cards) and financial aid partnerships with Western Union.
  • Initial project is piloting today at Houston Astrodome, want to expand it as soon as possible.
  • Amount is based on numbers of family members and other factors.
  • Although clients are being assisted through a variety of payment methods (e.g., Client Assistance Cards, vouchers, chapter-issued checks), the assistance received is consistent throughout the country.
  • Remember, at least 91 cents of every dollar donated to the American Red Cross goes directly to disaster relief efforts.

  • Evacuees can register in shelters where there is communications capability and family and friends can enter names and information to link to evacuees.
  • To date, approximately 94,000 people have registered on the Web site and more than 45,000 have called the hotline.

How to help

  • Churches across the country are reaching out to the Red Cross.

  •  Coordinating your efforts with other organizations and agencies
  • Donating goods such as food or clothing:

·        Donations of goods and services, though well intentioned, have hidden costs and complicate relief efforts. The Red Cross is unable to accept items such as used clothing, hygiene items, furniture, toys, cleaning supplies and canned goods.

·        If you or your organization, agency, or corporation has resources to
offer, such as housing, services, construction equipment, transportation, food and/or personal items, please register with the national Emergency Resource Center at https://www.swern.gov/.

Notes:

  • Evacuees: The Red Cross views the individuals and families being helped as "evacuees." The term "refugees" implies they have been forced to cross international boundaries to avoid conflict.
  • When any individual comes to the Red Cross and seeks shelter or assistance, we ask them for only enough basic information to identify them, meet any special dietary needs and notify loved ones if needed and when possible.
  • Disaster Assistance: All American Red Cross disaster assistance is free, made possible by voluntary donations of time and money from the American people
